First Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament to Set Precedent in Collective International Parliamentary Work

  • Over 100 key figures, 1000 participants, 400 MPs from 50 countries, and 100 Arab MPs to join the summit

The Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, which will be organized by the UAE Federal National Council (FNC) in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union between 12 – 13 December 2016, is the first of its kind in terms of collective global parliamentary work.

To be held in Emirates Palace under the theme ‘United for Shaping the Future’, the summit will witness the participation of 50 women speakers of parliament, in addition to political leaders, government officials, private sector representatives, leaders of international organizations, scientists, inventors and the youth. The summit will address important issues and key challenges that are shaping our present and future, with a focus on finding solutions to common global issues.

To be organized under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, the event will feature around 100 futurists, 1000 international participants, 400 MPs representing 50 states, 100 Arab MPs, and 200 young participants, making the summit a global platform for discussing various issues that concern people of the world.

Through its eight sessions, the Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament will shed light on a number of geopolitical, social, economic, environmental, and technological topics that shape our current the world and will transform the future.

Notably featuring scientists and young participants, the event will focus on unifying efforts of parliamentary leaders and setting up mechanisms for change that can meet the demands of security and people’s sustainable welfare. The summit will offer ideas and solutions through a collaborative approach that involves global parliaments to put an end to conflicts and achieve the objectives of the summit and the mission of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

By focusing on several main topics throughout the eight sessions, such as unity for peace and security, ensuring economic prosperity, protecting the planet, and supporting innovation and the youth, the summit will provide a platform to discuss major challenges and exchange ideas on best practices to overcome these challenges. It will also convene some leading thinkers who share similar values and objectives. In addition, the summit will come up with implementable recommendations that help solve challenges on a global scale.

Most notably, the summit will showcase the UAE’s leading international role in shaping the future, the country’s support to innovation and providing an enabling environment for creativity, and its efforts to build future smart cities. During the event, a number of Emirati success stories will be highlighted by inviting Emirati inventors to participate in the exhibition and present their inventions. The summit will devise recommendations that can be implemented in collaboration between national parliaments and their governments in an effort to ensure a safe and conflict-free future.

To be issued during the Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, the Abu Dhabi Declaration for Shaping the Future will be signed by participants as part of their political and parliamentary responsibilities that aim to enhance world peace and shape the future through legislations and policies that support development.
