Biography

Her Excellency Mrs. Akja Tajiyewna Nurberdiyeva is the Chairperson and the Speaker of the Mejilis of Turkmenistan, the country’s legislative branch. She is also the head of Turkmenistan’s delegation to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

In her career spanning four decades, Mrs. Nurberdiyeva has held several key positions in the academic and political world. A doctor of philosophy, she first worked in 1978 as a teacher at the Turkmen State Pedagogical Institute of Arts. A few years later, she taught at the Higher Komsomol School, her alma mater, and an institution of higher education attached to the Central Committee of the All-Union Lenin Communist Youth League. Over the years, she has held various key positions at Ashgabat Regional Committee of Komsomol.

Mrs. Nurberdiyeva has served at the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan. She was the Head of the International and Inter Parliamentary Relations Committee representing Turkmenistan, and the Chairwoman of the National Centre of Trade Unions.

Mrs. Nurberdiyeva also served as the instructor in the Organisational Work Department of the Lenin District Party Committee of Ashgabat city. She was the secretary of the Geok-Tepe District Party Committee of the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, and also to the Akhal Province Committee of the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan.

Between 2003 and 2006, she was the deputy chair of the Parliament of Turkmenistan. She was elected to the post of Chairperson in 2007.
